Modern Foreign Languages

At Aycliffe Community Primary School, we want pupils to develop an enthusiasm for learning languages and the confidence to communicate in another language. Through Spanish, pupils develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while also developing an appreciation of other languages and cultures.

We follow the Kapow Primary Spanish curriculum in Key Stage 2, using its mixed-age pathway to ensure that learning is carefully sequenced across our two-year curriculum cycles. Pupils progressively develop their vocabulary, pronunciation and understanding of Spanish grammar, with regular opportunities to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish.

Learning builds upon what pupils already know, with opportunities to revisit and apply previously learned vocabulary and language structures in different contexts. Teachers adapt teaching appropriately to meet pupils' individual needs while maintaining ambitious expectations for all.

Assessment
Teachers use pupils' spoken and written work, discussion and questioning alongside Kapow's assessment opportunities to identify what pupils know, understand and can do and to inform future teaching.
