History

 At Aycliffe Community Primary School, we want pupils to develop a secure understanding of the past and how it has shaped the world in which they live today. Through History, pupils develop their knowledge of significant people, events, societies and periods, while learning to think and work increasingly as historians.

We follow the Kapow Primary History curriculum, using its mixed-age pathway to ensure that learning is carefully sequenced across our two-year curriculum cycles. Pupils build their chronological understanding and develop their knowledge of important historical concepts alongside the disciplinary skills of historical enquiry, interpretation and the use of evidence.

Learning builds upon what pupils already know, with opportunities to revisit and connect knowledge across units. Teachers adapt teaching appropriately to meet pupils’ individual needs while maintaining ambitious expectations for all.

Assessment
Teachers use pupils’ work, discussion and questioning alongside Kapow’s end-of-unit assessment opportunities to identify what pupils know and understand and to inform future teaching.
