Physical Education

At Aycliffe Community Primary School, we want pupils to develop the physical skills, knowledge, confidence and enjoyment needed to lead active and healthy lives. Through PE, pupils develop their physical competence while learning to work collaboratively, make decisions, challenge themselves and participate positively in physical activity.

Our school-developed PE curriculum is carefully sequenced across our mixed-age classes and two-year curriculum cycles. Pupils experience a broad range of physical activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, gymnastics and dance, target games, athletics, striking and fielding activities and outdoor and adventurous activities.

Learning is progressive, with pupils developing increasingly sophisticated physical skills alongside their tactical understanding, decision-making, teamwork and ability to evaluate and improve their performance. Teachers adapt activities appropriately to meet pupils' individual needs while maintaining ambitious expectations for all.

We want pupils to understand the importance of physical activity and develop positive attitudes towards being active, while demonstrating values such as respect, perseverance, cooperation and fair play.

Assessment
Teachers use observation, questioning and pupils' performance in lessons to assess their developing skills, knowledge and understanding against our PE progression and assessment statements. This informs subsequent teaching and opportunities for further development.
